I just had my car serviced, put the PCM in since I didnt want the dealer to accidently reflash it. Talked to ZZP on the phone this mornin, they said unless the Check engine light comes on, it wouldnt need a case learn done to it. Granted they said they would do it for free since its a quick 2 minute job. But after all the talk of people needing to get a case learn, they said most of the cars they get that order that 1.0 pcm, dont get a case learn...

Im lost.

Any time the cam, PCM , CAM sensor, CRANK sensor, crank, or engine is physcially changed a CASE learn is MANDATORY.

If you had a stock PCM that was in your car, and you put an aftermarket in and had it CASED to the car you could then alternate those two PCMs without having to have another CASE done each time provided the cam, various sensors, and engine remained the same.

The other day I looking at a PCM from intense I will get after I do my 1.9s . & I saw this "- Every INTENSE™ PCM is coded with the correct year, make and model of your vehicle. This means that even if your car is a 1998, 2000, 2001 or 2002, you won't be required to enter 1999 into a Tech II to perform a Crankshaft Position Variation (CASE) Learn and that this PCM is undetectable by a dealer."

That makes it sound like 98,00,01,02 would not need a case lean.
Or is that just speaking of not having your pcm coded with the 99 year in it?

Not so...

What it means is that some of the earlier aftermarket PCMs were based on 1998 or 1999 code, even if the car was in fact not of that model year. This is because an OS ID for the reprogrammed PCM was from a 1998 or 1999 and you had to select that year in the TECH II when doing a CASE Learn (Crankshaft Position Variation Learn Proceedure).

Not true, 97'* need it as well sometimes. The CASE parameters are located inside the knock module of the 97 pcm. If that is swapped over to the new PCM you usually don't have to have a CASE done however if you don't swap the knock module or you get an SES light indicating the error code for crankshaft sensor you will still need to have the CASE done.
