Homies? Next person trying to sound Hip in a totally wrong place for it gets banned for a week. hehehe. J/K, or am I?

The LS4 as Pat relates is truly a dissapointment. More torque. Hmmm. [email protected]/Lbs out of 323cid. This is all GM could muster from a "new generation" of all aluminum? They punched 375HP out of 327cid almost 50 years ago. And to go through the trouble of a swap for that?
The issues covered here throughout the thread are old info for N* blocks made before the 2003 version of the LD8, that said; 16 patented improvements separate the 05 LD8 and the '03. I have not seen ONE reference of snapped head bolts or blown head gaskets in our version and alot are passing 150K. Sick of hearing the old wives tales. And that what they are. And those that repeat them sound like a bunch of old Biddies in a Hair Salon. My only fear was pushing approx nitrous gained 350 HP against an engine that I falsely perceived weak listening to the Old Biddies before I actually learned otherwise. I beat the crap out of my N* protected by a 7/70 GMPP and @ 47k, it purrs like new and actually keeps losing/using less oil. Whats missing here from this discussion is how awesome the LD8 could be if the PCM could be over ridden with a decent controller, or replaced. 32Valves, chain drive, girdled instead of rod caps and fuel delivery being adapted to the L67. It has the makings for a true beast if we could take the electronic leash off it. It'* easy to taunt a chained dog.

The 3800'* exhaust note just isn't as absolutely amazing! But yes, I agree with Pat that the 3800 with a turbo or supercharger can always beat those crazy Corvettes! Too bad they had to take out the GN because of it... :(

IMO it is very difficult to make a Series 2 3800 sound good. A Series 2 3800 will never sound as good as a Northstar no matter what you do to it.

Hey, thanks for bringing this back up! I just had a realization. The LS4 is the same block but with a smaller displacement as an LS1. There are LS4 owners with some camshaft issues by which the lobes simply wear away. They're going to LS6 cams. Because you can go to an LS6 stock cam, you can go to pretty much anything, like an aftermarket high lift LS6 cam. And since it'* an LSX block, you can get the whole LS6 intake, LS6 heads, all that delicious stuff. And then, you could actually go to an LS1 block. GM made one Impala with an FWD LS1, and some guy bought the model and took it apart to put it into his GP GXP. So as far as I'm aware, there'* a GP GXP out there with an LS1 in the front. Perhaps even modded.

So covering that the LS4 can be modded however you like, that the LS1 could fit, and such, I have a point to make. GM makes wiring harnesses for LSX swaps. Also, as we've seen with Pontiacjeff and a few Impala guys, it'* possible to control a 4T80E with pretty much any engine. So, ultimately, you could make a FWD LS9 with a 4T80E and have a 640 HP Bonneville.

I've been reading on LS1tech.com, and more sane people than me evidently post there. There'* a guide on swapping to an LS1, but the author writes that swapping to the truck version of the LS4 is the same thing aside from gaining 65 lb and losing 40 hp as compared to a real LS1. Basically, it'* cheaper. This seems to be extremely straightforward, and all you have to do is set up a PCM for the engine, a transmission-only computer, make sure they work together, and go with whatever engine/trans combo you want. Even a N* assuming that a) you can hook up the sensors to the PCM or b) you can hook up the PCM'* sensors to it.

So, you're only about $700 away, buying full retail, from tuning an LD8. And I'm spent.

Ok. I was a previous LS4 owner. I loved that engine, and did gobs of research into tuning it.

My plan was: Aftermarket LS6 Wild cam, aftermarket heads, ls6 intake system, port/polish everything, balance it, and throw on a turbo. With all that said and done I would have been in the 700+ HP range. A L67 will NEVER touch that.

I mean Hell, with just a turbo bolted to an LS4 you go from 303 (crank)HP to just a hair under 500 (wheel)HP

Did INTENSE racing ever break the 10 second 1/4 mile time in a Bonneville? I know they got into the 8'* with a grand prix.

How do you control torque steer with 700whp on the front wheels?

Intense did 810 whp on a twin turbo 3800. One Cartuning kit turbo with a 61mm compressor wheel turbo and about a <.70 area ratio will get a fully stock L36 from 205 hp to about 350 IIRC. Just a few mods, like a cam and exhaust, and you pass the 500 hp mark. Then there are heads and other awesome things. While the LS4 is really cool, the 3800 is just as amazing aside from the whole iron block thing.
