Default The Little Fiero That Could, Need Some Information

Hi Guys, after searching the web and trying to find a forum that can help me the most, this seemed to be the best. Skip to the 3rd paragraph if you dont want to read the history

I have a 1985 Pontiac Fiero, it orginally came with a puny 2.5L 4cyl that the owner before me took out and replaced with a DIS 1987 3.8L. When I bought It I assumed it was a 3800-1, but I was wrong. Still a good motor I figured I traded my 2 stock fieros for this one with the 3.8L with hopes of power and reliabilty. This turned out to be wrong. I got it in Oct '05 and didnt recieve the title until early december when snow was around. So the car under went cosmetic changes and interior work. When April came around I got it legalized and drove it a happily 500 miles with no problems... then my luck came back and the motor spun a bearing and was siezed.
I rebuilt the motor, but on start up the oil pump failed to prime quickly enough and it delevoped a knock on the front main bearing. It is still running with 1500+ miles on it after changing the bearings.

A friend of my dads gave me a 1990 Regal with I guess a pre series 1 3800. A little more prep and better relabilty. The car was rolled and he took the tranny out. So the motor is going to be easy to get out . He just dropped the car off at my house this morning.

Basically I just need to know if I am going to run into any problems with the sensors being different? The Fiero is wired to run the '87 3.8L using the Fiero computer piggy backed by I believe 2 little black boxes from the '87 PCM. I would assume I can run the 3800 using the 3.8L and Fiero Wiring, no prob? One thing I noticed was the fuel is MPI on the 1990 I am unsure what it is for the '87.

Aftermarket? Is there one for this motor. I read somewhere I can bolt a supercharger up from a later 3800 with no prob to the LN3? This sounds to simple...

So give me your guys knowledge as the fiero community mostly is the new 3800-2SC and so forth, they cant help as much as I hope you guys can!

If this isnt the right place to post please move it!
Thanks everyone

There are diffrences between the way that 87 was controled and the way the 88 was controled... Keep in mind its the same motor, but the 87 used a single ring crank sensor, and the 88 used a dual ring crank sensor...

The 1990 3800 is always listed as MPI, Never could figure that one out as its actually an SFI engine... This engine has a Dual ring crank sensor as well as the Cam sensor...

Is the 90 A " Tuned Port Injection 3800 " L27? Or is it a " 3800 Fuel Injection "

Both great engines, but the Tuned Port got some better breathing ability which made for better power curves

Im unsure which one it is, I only got to eyeball the motor before heading to work. It does have the plastic covering over the fuel rail that says the motor type, not sure if that helps idenify it or not.

But wont my ECM be able to just read the one crank sensor and be happy? I dont like computers anymore lol

Is there any aftermarket exhaust headers for this motor? 1990 3800.
I got the motor out this weekend but its so hot around here I havent done much to it.
Things I know have to address, new fuel lines and swapping throttlebodies. The new 3800 TB has the vaccum lines done in a much different way, unless anyone can give me an idea of the vaccum lines on the motor, but the easiest way seemed to swap throttlebodies.

Pics to come soon
