Default Should I change the size of engine

Hey so I am new here and in need of help!
I bought my first car (a 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL, 2.4l DOHC) I got it around 100,000 miles, the previous owner had just gotten the belt replaced and then sold it to me. I drove it to 121,573 miles before the timing belt broke. Come to find out the pulley broke and shredded the belt.
I pulled the motor apart with intentions to fix the motor every thing was fine except the aluminium timing chain cover was torn up. I did some searching for the replacement and come to find out the part is no longer produced.
Now I now I could go to the junk yard and get a the same motor for $675 with lower miles but I kind of what to shove a supercharged 3.8l in but not sure if it would fit. Would cost the same if a get a junk car, I am willing to do the work but was wondering if it is worth the work to change the motor or not or even if the swap would work. So someone HELP, please.

Not sure, considering they are born with 4cyl engines, the mountings are different than the V-6'*. Nor do I have knowledge of how much room is in there.

In the long run, I'm not sure if its worth the effort considering what must be done. If you get a Series 1 engine, then you can use a Series 1 PCM/harness/transmission and probably keep your current cluster. If you attempt a Series 2 L67, this is a whole different breed of OBD(Series 2 is OBD2, vs Series 1 OBD1) OBD 2 would not be compatible with your chassis(body electronics)

On another note, here in our shop, we have had belt tensioners go bad on Ford 350'* that chew up the front cover. Instead of spending 30 hours replacing it, we put epoxy over it and ship it. They never come back leaking. It'* not morally correct, but the customer is happy and so are we because we don't like working on light duty **** vehicles(we are heavy duty shop).

Something is not adding up. The Cutless Supreme is a W Body, and only came with a 3.1 or 3.4 V6.

I was also thinking that the 2.4 came after '94

I thought that too, then I consulted The Napa. The 1994 Cutlass Ciera could be had with a 2.4 or 3.1 .

That having been said, it would appear the biggest thing GM thought of putting in that car is a 60-degree V6. I'd bet a 3800 of any sort wouldn't fit without major modifications. Then it'd be heavy and make the front of the car sit low. Then the radiator won't fit. Then the electronics. Then yada yada yada.

Before getting too deep in how to overcome all of this, I'll wait and see if Mattyhewson25 is interested in doing all of this.

Oh, wait, I just looked at his profile, and it lists a 3.4l, leaving us contemplating a typographical error in this thread.

We are already working around a DOHC 60* V6.

The Regal, also a W-body, came with the 3.8 in it, 1996 of which was series 2 from the factory. No supercharged variants came in the 91-96 body style, however I imagine the only additional clearance needed would be stuff on the accessory side, because of the extra belt, and the top side for the supercharger.

This thread chronicles the tale of an L67 swap in a Cutless Supreme.

You'll just need to read between the bits where he shoves another engine in the rear.

Ahhhhh the infamous LQ1. Good catch, now it all makes sense!

With this in mind, and knowing it isn't an interference engine, I'd say he'* best off repairing or replacing the timing cover (and belt) and putting it back together with the current engine. This in the interest of going with an otherwise known-good engine as opposed to a lower-mile engine with unknowns possibly lurking. If he really really really REALLY wants that extra 25HP then he'd want to maaaaaybe contemplate swapping an L67 in and go through all the trauma that we discussed above. Then make the transmission work with it and hope it holds up.

. . . and while he'* taking engines in and out it would be best to change spark plugs on the LQ1 and the alternator too. Those things are a pain to change.

The 3.4 DOHC was a nightmare to work on.......If you had an alternator in a 3.8 engine, it would take all of 10 minutes to replace.....in this beast, the first time, 4 hours or more.....I kid you not.....and yes, the 3.4 "X" motor did have timing belts...

I always wondered why they never called it a quad 6....

Yeah I know the pain of that. Best time to do any accessory on one of these is while it is dangling from a chain or bolted to a stand.
