Default 97 olds 88 rear shoes click/clunk

Hey everyone.

my olds 88 has always made a click/clunk noise from the rear drums

I had replaced them several times due to improperly balanced drums when buying new, but always get a cluck, or click sound when braking, both sides

heavy braking will not make the noise, but normal will

a click per rotation

I was thinking drums out of round, but none of them have been quiet/

they have the big W looking spring that holds them in place

I had one of the sets turned... lasted a few days till click came back

whats going on here?

Are the backsides of the shoes lubricated?

Are the spring loaded retention clips that pull the shoes toward the back plate (one on top and one on bottom of each shoe) in place. Did you adjust the adjuster until the shoes start to rub on the drum, then back off a couple clicks. When you pull the wheel off is there any play in the brake assembly?

I have this exact issue, however i suspect the previous owner left the ebrake on, and cooked the brakes, and warped everything. New brakes/drums and i still have the issue. I suspect my hub is warped some how, because that is the only thing left turning back there.

i have given up on the quest, and just live with it now.

This has the single W looking spring and also acts as a tensioner.. no clips

adjuster is fine, and no play when taking off drum.. it slides right off

I think it'* something simple, hope someone knows the fix, I too have been just putting up with it, Even if the drum was warped, none of them are perfectly round after first brake, they are made to move around and work that way... so it has to be something simple

Perhaps someone else can chime in and tell me I am wrong, but every drum brake system I have ever worked on had retention clips. They are pins with a washer and a spring. You insert the pin through the back of the back plate and through a hole in the brake shoe, place the spring over the pin, place the other washer over the pin, and twist the washer until the flats on the pin line up properly to hold it in place. One on the top and bottom of each shoe.

and those pins are the first thing to rust through so if you were missing it, its not real surprising
