That squirrel is recreating an ancient Mayan ritual called 'Barkikus rubbicus crotchicus' where the village elders would strip bark from trees and then rub their naked ______ on it.

This was done with squirrels (the central american variety) tied to the trees with their eyelids glued open with tree sap (forcing them to watch). The squirrels were later released (in a rather horny mood) and allowed to breed.

These Mayan squirrels migrated north over the next few hundred years and now populate North America.
