It may never happen to you individually Todd, but rather safe than sorry. Stolen ID'* can take years to recover and unauthorized charges and costs remain your obligation.

Crece, I am surprised your Dell with XP Pro loaded doesnt lock up all the time. 512Mb is considered minimal for the standard edition.
I was surprised too. From what I've read the C400 was a well designed machine in its day. I use "System mechanic" on both my machines but on this one it comes in handy to tweak out all of the unnecessary startup programs . Helps conserve memory and the cpu doesn't take such a beating. Not unlike a good tuneup.

I have an Inspiron 1300 built nearly 4 years ago. I now only use it for visiting/trips and such. Nice price, 1.73 Ghz, 512 Mb ram. Once I got everything I wanted in, it started getting sluggish and when I felt the bottom, very hot. I got this program Dell Inspiron Inspiron/Latitude/Precision fan control to max fan control which has been an an age old Dell problem with it'* variable speed fan/* control. It helped cool it down, but amazed me at how hot it was actually getting once I could actually see the temps. My memory temps were running a constant 172F and peaked at 202-204 while gaming or hacking with WPE Pro. (Not going to elaborate) Upping memory to 1.25 gig really cooled things off incredibly. Smooth sailing in the range of 100-140ish F . Try the program I linked. It'* free, stable, shows you an incredible amount of info like CPU, GPU, and Memory temps. Processor speeds and load, and gives you total contol pf fan/*. It only works on Inspiron and Lattitudes.

+1 on the Dell Inspiron Inspiron/Latitude/Precision fan control

I've been using it now for about 6 months and love it!

I downloaded the program and all I can say is wow! My system is much happier now. BTW, I picked up a belkin laptop cooler pad a few weeks ago for under $20. Great for laptops 15" or smaller. Works well with the fan on or off. Great if you are actually using your laptop in your lap. Perfect fit for the Lattitude.

Glad you liked the program, if I remember it doesnt tell the fan speeds for the 400 but shows the various temps and allows for maxxing the fans. Being a redneck, I glued 4 plastic bottle caps from 16oz Pepsi'* on the little rubber tabs underneath my laptop. Hey, I noticed cooler temps, And I can type better.

Some how I figure your gonna do this Todd. LOL! The clear all purpose glue works best. Super Glue kept failing after time. Also unscrew the cover nearest the fan once in awhile and clean out the dust on the heat sink. You wont believe whats in there the first time you take it off.
