As a continuation to a continuation of http://www.bonnevilleclub.com/forum/...hlight=project , I am rebuilding the motor.
The crank was roasted. There was burnt oil in the oil outlets of the crank and mains.
The bearings on cylinder 3 or 4 were as thin as a razor
For the rods, 3 were good, 3 were shot, so there are 6 on the way.
The FACTORY installed plugs were still in after 11 years and 132,725 miles :? I am guessing that maintance was not a "big deal" with this poor motor
The gears in the oil pump looked like they had been sandblasted
I need new lifters. The old ones fell out when pulling the crank
I should replace the cam drive gear and chain. There was some good play in the chain.
The block is being bored out 30 over, line homed, hot tanked and magna-fluxed. I pick that up tomorrow and hopefully start rebuilding the lower end tomorrow afternoon
There was no physical damage to the block, thank God!, but it needed a good cleaning.
I know I need to post pics.
I cannot get to photobucket from work, but will tackle that tonight wehn I get home.

I also purchased a 96 blazer with a blown motor. Had some difficulty getting the right connecting rod set because the 4.3 was built in two different factory'* and there were different connecting rod weights depending on the crankshaft casting no'*. I found out that there was 13 grams weight difference when I compared them. You should be okay although if your replacement set are the same weight.

You can see where the piston was slapping the crap out of the head from that loose rod on cylinders 2 and 5

This is the "anti-sieze" picture. It is a beautifully blended 50/50 mix of metal shavings and Penzoil
Take good care of your vehicle. You do not want to know what this rebuild is costing me
