Default It upsets me when...

I request a quote for renters insurance through a company partnered with my auto insurance, and am quoted $178 a year. I suppose that rate is acceptable. Then it asks me for basic information, SSN, how the house is heated (natural gas furnace), and other questions that if I answered yes to, would understandably increase risk (answered no to all of them).

My credit: Fine, but was overextended for a while, but under control now
Claim history: No claims ever filed at all for me

My new rate: $427/year
My response: No thanks!

Insurance underwriters are very annoying people.

Sorry to hear about it. They are using credit scores to justify charging higher rates on people who are a low risk. The entire "credit score" is a con. Started by a company called Fair Isaac.

I would suggest to shop hard, you may be able to find a rate near 178, and not give into the credit score trickery.

My auto insurance has been with USAA for about 12 years now. 2 years ago, I decided to add renters insurance to my policy. I think I pay an additional $9 a month for a $30,000 policy. Full coverage for both vehicles, glass/towing coverage, renters = $86 a month.
