More often than I'd care to remember, I'm in the back of an ambulance with a patient cruising down the highway at 110km/hr. What is my partner doing??? Texting frickin' messages. I've had strong words on more than one occasion over this.
I'm not big on texting. In fact I've probably sent about 9 in the years I've had a phone. I like to talk to people. I like to hear people laugh. I want to hear the expression in their voice.
More later... gotta run!

Anyway, sometimes I think we've lost the interpersonal aspect of communication. I'd like to think I might say something to brighten someones day. Often people say something to bring up my day. Maybe I can make them laugh (although usually people just laugh AT me). I hear and interpret these things much better than I read and interpret. I am much more inclined to use electronics for (some) business communications since this is more a "send me the information, provide me with the facts, short and sweet" circumstance (for me). I'm usually on the purchasing end of things, not on the selling. If I was in sales, verbal communication would be more important for me.
This also isn't about technology and not wanting to use it or "keep up" with it. Electronics today are fantastic and I believe will only get better. I like to buy technology, I like to use technology.
Perhaps I fit into the 'old' category here. Family and friends are people I'd rather invest the time of conversation with. I believe these are some of the things which will leave me with great memories later.
Anyway for what it'* worth, these are my thoughts.

I average about 1400 txts/month. It'* how I communicate with all of my friend who may be in class, at work, or just don't feel like talking on the phone. I may even be in the same situation.
The txts to and from the GF probably make a third of the txts tho.
Thank God most of my friends have Verizon

ddalder, I agree to a point. You're right, nonvocal conversation leaves a lot to be desired. I have a very smartalecky personality, and sometimes that'* misinterpreted in text form. It'* gotten me into trouble more than once...
I text a lot because my job is extremely unpredictable. I get downtime, but it'* random. If I'm on the phone, I'm constantly putting people on hold, so I text instead. I can respond at my leisure!
Usage as of this morning: 779 texts...

I make 50+ texts or aim comments from my phone everyday.
If I didn't have a full keyboard I probably wouldn't bother. T9 is such a PITA. I hated having to turn it on and off for words it didn't know..
It'* just alot easier to keep up with my friends during the day and ask 2 sec questions.
A lot of times people just can't pick up thier phone. So, rather then go through the whole voicemail b.*. you can see what'* up via a text real quick.

On my phone, If I start a message and then keep hitting (>) it will make up its own message with the words I use most. Makes some pretty crazy sentences

I know, I know.
But the reason I know that is I borrowed a friends phone (he'* russian) and it tried to put all these crazy words in there. Most of them were curses I recognized.. haha.
I still stick by a nice and spaced out full keyboard though. (I have a sidekick)
A lot of the time I don't even have to look at what I'm typing.

I also love how unlimited Texting is $10 mo for me, So I have AIM Mobile, facebook, Email, etc all forwarded there.
GoogleSMS is great for getting phone/address, info without a phone book, etc.
