I had a first gen PS2 for over a year and transported it every weeknd to my cousins house where we sometimes played it for like 30 hours or more over 2 days, and I never had one problem with it. I ended up selling it after I got married 
and it worked fine up til then.
I have now had the Slim version for about 1 year and I don't get much chance to play but it has always worked fine.
But I do agree that waiting awhile for the price to drop and the bugs to be worked out is certainly a wise decision. But if I had the time to play and the money to get it, I'd probably buy the PS3 ASAP.
As far as Wii, it looks cool and the price is better, but I kind of have a prejudice against Nintendo, just seems kinda childish to me. I am kind of intrigued by the controller idea, though.

I always end up getting almost all the consoles that come out (starting with the nintendo/sega gen), but I always find my self playing the nintendo console the most. So I will be going for the Wii. I loved my playstation 1, but I thought the PS2 was buns. The loading times are horrible and all the games I was salivating for were a real dissapointment. I never played any of them for more than 5 hours. I will probably pick up a PS3 when they are cheap like maybe 4 to 5 years from now. For now I just wanna play with my Wii! 
Nintendo= quality over quantity and hype

It'* at my house and I'm in school, but I assure you, it'* the first gen. I bought it from my friend who waited in line with his dad for a whole day to reserve it, and he got it the first day it came out.

Wii. More innovative, cheaper, and the Nintendo fanbase 
IMO, sony needs to do more than upgrading graphics. $600 for a video game console is also nuts.
