Beyond the Open Office approach, which from my experience is pretty decent considering it'* a freebie, there'* always the Student edition of Office. Most places sell it for $100 and it'* legal. (They don't actually check the college/school against a list or anything, you just affirm that you are a student..which your wife really is.) It is also available as a 60 day trial download directly from Microsoft.

You can probably find someone hawking a new in the box copy of Office 2000, 2003, or XP on popular shopping sites for about half of that.
