Another advantage to that calling card, is if people come over, they can't make long distance calls if you don't HAVE long distance. Depends on your friends and family though, how useful that might be.
I have a verizon land line package that is unlimited local and LD throughout North America. It was a contract deal, good at the time, pricey now, about $70 per line. I use Direcway for a broadband ISP, unfortunately the satellite introduces a lag time which provides for poor performance using both a VPN and/or VOIP. The plan in the near future is to switch to either DSL or cable (wasn;t available at the time, but now is) and migrate to a vonage type of VOIP. Much more cost effective.

Best land line deal I could find was with a Verizon contract. Not sure what you have in your area. Everyone that I know that has a vonage type of service (Voice Over Internet Protocol) loves it. It does require a broadband ISP like DSL or cable (I have 2-way satellite for my ISP - won;t work). You have to do some research on plans, but basically, they are all a low rate for everything. You do need to purchase VOIP phones as well.
