Default Merry Christams, you're diabetic.

Went in this morning for my DOT physical, everything came out fine, my BP is good, cholesterol is okay, and I dropped thirty pounds since my last physical two years ago.
So everythings cool, right? Wrong, doctor did a cup test, and there was sugar in the urine. Came back and did a finger-stick, ran it through the meter, and it came up at 273. Not anything spectacularly bad, but a definite indicator for Type 2.
I know some of the basic stuff about diet and so on, so I'll make a few adjustments, and the doc gave me some sample meds to try and bring those numbers down, and I go back for a follow-up on the 27th.
Unfortunately, this also means that I can't get my physical renewed until I do get them down, so I am temporarily off the road. Bad timing, because I'm already broke. Hopefully, I can get this thing under control quickly enough that the hold-back on my check tides me over.
Not the end of the world, obviously, but a major PITA. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Same here..Well I'm in the first stages.

I was in the 250s a few years ago, have not been back since.

Biggest thing you can do is lose weight and get back into shape. I've been trying to for about 2 years now. I gained about 80lbs in like 6 months after high school and have been trying to kill it every since, I'm down right around 200 now, I should be at about 170 or so for 5'11"......

I wish you luck though...Let me know if I can help out in anyway!!

Merry Christmas..

Don't worry, I know you'll get it down, with the aid of excerise, diet, and meds. You could think of this as a vacation. I know you said you're broke but it'* still vacation!

a friend of mine a while ago was told he was boarder line and had to lose weight and change a few things, he cut out all drinking and pork products and changed from sugar in coffie to sweetener and from 2% milk to 1% milk. he droped from maybe 325lbs(from which he has been for the past 30+ years) to 225lbs in under a year. He said he never felt better and misses non of the stuff that he had to cut out and the doc says it helped bigtime.

So from what i saw from him, im sure you can make the changes to help yourself, without to much trouble.

The dietary changes and excercize are made a litttle harder by being on the road, but it'* do-able. I was planning on buying a bike come spring, looks like I may be getting one sooner.
My big sugar source is Mountain Dew, and the diet version is nasty. Looks like I'll be drinking that Sierra Mist Free stuff from now on.

You can mix the two and gradually switch over to the diet version, but I agree with you, I don't care for it either (and I even like Tab!) Look inito Diet Dr.Pepper, Dt Pepsi and their flavored versions. Dt Lime Coke is my current kick. The same method works with milk too. The wife an I had switched over to skim years ago and I cannot even stand whole milk anymore, it just taste soo gross now; a complete 180 from when whole milk is all I would drink...LOL.

As stated there are alot of dietary changes coming down your way. work with a dietician if you can and be honest, but really your doctor should be doing an A1C to see how your sugars been over the past 3 months on average. Maybe you just had a coke that one day. Testing to determine if you're a diabetic should be done with a 12hr fast,

As for excercise, the one people stick with most is just walking. It also happens to be the cheapest

Good Luck!

yup. alot of people don't realize just how much sugar is in a coke. There roughtly 12 teaspoons of sugar in a 20oz bottle of soda! Throw in a bag of chips and you're not doing well at all. Coke has a Glycemic index of 17 and Doritos sits at 11 just to show you the impact carbs have on your system as well as sugar.

Don't have the option of doing anything gradually. I don't pass my DOT physical until my numbers are down. That means I can't drive CDL, which means I can't work.

Those DOT examines can be strict, one time they almost failed me because my BP was 135 over 80 on the first reading wich was after a stressfull day at work, after a couple minutes it went down and they passed me.
They wouldn't even give you a 6 month Med Card? Similar thing happened to another driver where I used to drive for, they gave him a 6 month, or maybe it was a three month, then he had to go back and be tested again, by that time though with diet and exercise everything was back in check.
