Some things I would suggest is tomake sure the backlight is not turned off, check the button as suggested if you have one, increase the brightness which usually involves holding down the blue Fn key and pressing the brightness up button (blue sun with an up arrow) key, and lastly try switching it to an extrenal dispaly and back again (another Fn + key combo).

If it still doesn't work then the problem is probably the inverter board.

And keep in mind, these are not inexpensive parts. I always suggest an extended warranty that covers against accidental drops with anything that you carry and costs more than you can afford to replace.
doesnt that FN+ something only work on Toshibas?

The inclusion of a function (Fn) key is pretty much an industry standard...

For me (IBM Thinkpad R series):

Fn + F7 = Projector/LCD/both
Fn + Home = Brightness Up
Fn + End = Brightness Down
Fn + F3 = LCD Off

etc...

Its different for diffrent laptops, thats why I said usually. CYA is rule #1. hehehe.
Not many companies really makes their own laptop, its just "rebranded". Toshiba may be the only exception, not sure as Ihaven't done this work in a while now, just on the side.

Well, it'* a used one, and I only paid like 200 bucks for it, so replacing parts would be kinda impractical. It was supposed to be for tuning my car, but I'll have to figure something else out. Anybody every hear of a "carputer"?

With some work a laptop would be good for a carputer. Go for it man.
