It's a Snap!
SSsuperchargedEi: No way, no how. I have driven both. Her'* is nowhere near as fast as my car. A turbo, MAY but I am doubtful. I'm also guessing [not to be rude or anything] but you have not driven a new beetle, have you?
Ol Timer: If reliability is the only thing stopping you from owning a classic VW... you really need to get with the program. You can pick up a classic [not a split window.. those are a little more, plus you have do deal with 6v electronics.. umm.. 12v for me please!, '63 was the last year for 6v I believe] for $2000, usually with a straight, rust free body. Pass on a car that needs new pans or heater channels. That'll be a bitch-and-a-half. http://www.thesamba.com/ is a GREAT resource in the VW Community. They have a VERY large classified ad section, for all VWs. Not to mention they have just all around great information. If you go to Florida, the classics are everywhere. I spotted about 25 for sale [mind you, 10 were all at a classic VW dealership, ALL CLASSIC VWs! I had to admit, I did spend a little over an hour there. Drooling, these aren't restored to beautiful masterpieces.. these are just your average, dull paint beetles. That run and drive just fine. Plus they had two VW things, several buses of all gens, and 10 bugs [the guy there said they get rid of about 10-20% of their stock in a month], the others were private sellers, or a stray one on a dealer lot.
The '67 had 50hp? You sure about that? I know in '63 they still had the 1200cc, but after that I am not sure if they stepped it up to the 1336cc, or when the 1600cc came into play. My mom'* old [now my dad'*] '78 super had the 1600cc, which was Fuel Injected, amazingly! I think it had around 50hp, but don't quote me on that.
And what'* this, your '67 didn't have Heat? How rusted were your heater channels? If your heater channels were that bad, you must of had plywood for pans, huh? hehe
. A/C? My dad installed A/C in our '78. He said it was pretty straightforward, nothing too difficult to add on. The biggest thing was bending the hard lines to conform to the engine. But, a classic doesn't need A/C. Roll the windows down, it'll feel better that way. ABS? Who needs ABS? Can you not pump your own brakes? No Power brakes is something I would mention.. because that is a big deal. But ABS... eh, I would rather do the pumping myself.. I don't care for a computer doing something I could. Seat warmers are only necessary in the winter. You wouldn't drive a classic in the winter, would you? As you can see.. not really quite an even match. I have a biased opinion, though.
If you got the 1776cc engine.. [18xxcc has a bad design.. warp-age, or something.. not sure exactly, but I know the 18xx is just a bored 1776, which makes the cylinder walls too thin, which is the cause of the problem, whatever it may be]. Which I know you could easily get 150hp out of [if you built it yourself]. I'm guessing if you tuned it right, and were a little more interested in power than anything, 200hp is very possible. But, if you want that much power, get a 19xxcc.. it'll be easier. Anyways, one of those engines, if built properly, would be more reliable than most other cars out there. Especially if you know how to work on it, so if you have a problem, you can fix it. Not to mention, I bet a 150hp 1776cc could stomp any new beetle. N/A or Turbo. I remember reading somewhere on some forums that one member had a 1776cc engine, making 16xhp ran low 15s consistantly, high 14s on good days. Now, if you ask me, that is friggin' awesome. And I KNOW you could send one of those suckers into the 12s with a 19xxcc, and perhaps a turbo. But, that'* enough off topic-ness. PM me or hit me up on AIM if you want to continue this.
My mom'* VW has power everything [incl. windows]. It is an '04, also. And we are having so many electrical issues with our'*. Including the windows, my switch seldom works, but her'* [incl the passenger window] works just fine every time. Sometimes the auto feature works, most times not.
Just my opinion... i'm a classic kind of guy. New cars really don't do it for me. Maybe in 20 years the bloated durango will look good to me, but probably not [i seriously thing Dodge took an Air compressor, made a fitting hidden under the car, and just filled up a prev. body style durango to an insane amount of PSI, and then called it the '05 Durango. It looks like the Durango had a little too much to eat at xmas!

I want to see the 17.3 numbers. And my car runs high 17s, low 18s stock. I'm thinking 16s when the rebuild is done. High 15s if I fix my tranny, or if it magically healed over winter.

1.8t beetles are rated high 15'* in most car magazines and can be easily modded
edit: i know i could never make you believe it (even though its right in front of you in plain sight). just make me feel better and admit you're wrong for once, its not difficult.
