Bill, like the Dinosaur that you are, , cast iron blocks will soon be relics. Get your reading glasses out old man,..... R-E-L-I-C-*. Northstars are what they are. A great balanced, smooth, lightweight, virtually maintenance free engine. Built for a segment of consumers that can afford to replace them with new when they wear out. They were never meant to be rebuilt. when it'* over, it'* over. So,.... alot end up in junkyards because people get them second hand and would rather scrap them, then pay the cost of a new replacement. More and more manufacturers are moving towards composite blocks/heads with coated internal parts that bring tolerances and clearances to a new level that is great for performance and not so great for wrenching dinosaurs that want to use something till the internal passages rust away.

I always wondered how you guys get at the back spark plugs with those incredibly short arms...............

Where'* that pm from John about how he'* afraid of his composite motor ??

I agree John..they are the bic lighter of motors. While they work..you are a proud owner. At 85K when it dies.. you feel like you got your monies worth. I jest..but this poor car has 85K and these motors that are being picked up are (supposedly) around 50K.

Unfortunately Dan made a mistake on this one when the owner of this car thought it still had lots of life left in it.

Morning Bill. Couldnt pass up a chance to "needle" a buddy this AM, Sun hasnt been out in 4 days, damp/cold. My fears have subsided some with alot of NOX under the engines belt and still purring, if I get 85,000 I will be happy and move on. I think they are finicky enuff and so much can go wrong, it'* not a good idea to get one out of a wrecking yard. But I understand alot of peoples situation. Who wants to drop 5 grand on a crate engine for a car not worth that much intact. But all in all, I am the proud owner of a 'Bic' with plenty of fuel left and at 2 years old, I still feel great about the requests to pop the hood everywhere when they see the Body mods and the NorthStar badges along side the GXP Emblems.

I've had 100 000kms of happy motoring with nary a problem with my whippy little 4.0L Northstar. Shes got 220 000kms and not a hint of a problem. The only change that has been made to the engine is valve cover gaskets and sparkplugs as well as an EGR cleaning.

Pretty maintenance free if you ask me.

The engine proper, has been seemless, the transmission shifts beautiful and my dreaded electrical issues have been minimal. I have no leverage to downplay this drivetrain and despite head gasket issues and early gen Northstar oil leak issues, its been a pretty solid engine for the General, found only in the best of the best cars that they produce.

I'm tryin to figure out was my Rivera cousin found so funny with my first post? :?

I'll go head to head with Boostmaster any day . He'll go to bed with his 3800 and I'll go to the trenches in support of my seemingly terrible Aurora

You all forget, I've owned 2 3800'*. I don't miss SC whine because its been aptly replaced with fabulous Magnaflow assisted exhaust and a screaming DOHC V8 at 6000 RPM.

Eat my shorts :P
