Nate... 90% it'* merely updating itself in the background and rebooting with certain updates. Leave it on overnight and that should finish it up.

hehe..fell for the rebate trap again i see. You will never see those. That HP is a throw away job, you will be lookign for another one in a year and half or so.
Its like Sears Lawn Tractors...just buy a new one every 3 or 4 years and throw the old one away. :o
OH YEAH, Dont buy any AntiVirus protection on that PC man...its a waste of 60 bucks. Aint worth it for that thing. Just let a ton of worms and stuff get in it.
That will happen quick with a few hours of viewing **** if you look at free **** all the time.
And i couldve built a better pc from barebones for $350 than that. Its a good projectile to toss off a highrise though, great fun. We did that with a 14" Gateway Crystalscan monitor from 1994 last year.
Hell, the file server i built 3 years ago I am using now is faster than that thing. All parts including the 5950 ultra nvidia card totalled around 1400 but it is a great project. Kicks major *** in BF2 too even. Got a sweet case for it also, side window and red cold cathode lights and 6 fans.WOOT

well obviously your computer is faster than his, so is mine, mine was almost a grand, his was 350...you get what you pay for...you cant expect two PCs with a 1000 dollar price difference to be comparable at all.
and could you build a PC to beat or compare to that AND have a LEGIT operating system? methinks not, Windows XP Home is 100 bucks in itself, now granted i for one didnt pay for my OS...but its hard to beat those functional computers WITH an OS installed for only 300 bucks or so.
Lakeville if you take good care of it itll be a nice relatively speedy machine for a while, its not a hardcore gaming machine or anything but im sure you knew that when you bought it, bring the RAM up to 512 or 1GB, i wouldnt run XP on less than 512 if i had my way. and get yourself some Virus Protection, Firewall, Spyware removal and all that junk, dont listen to auroradude.....
well aside from that being possibly the dumbest thing ive heard all day.....if you dont want to spend lots of money on Antivirus stuff and Firewall and whatnot there are lots of free ones available, i currently use AVG Antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall...and questions feel free to ask, there are a few computer people around here...and if we cant help you go over to www.computerforum.com good people over there for the most part, and they know their stuff, im a member there as well, same username.
Congrats on the purchase! and im sure youll get those rebates back, im sure if HP made a habit of "not sending them back" somebody would be doing something about it, just make sure you read all the fine print before you send em, and send em in on time...

Mine is legit, paid $200 for the home edition full version package. I shouldve paid the extra 100 for professional, as i couldve used it with all my networking bs.
I couldnt crack XP. I almost got winlogon.exe completely disabled but i fudged it up and ended up reinstalling anyway, so oh well. If i couldve...i certainly wouldve.
Mod edit: Geeze I never have anything good to ever say, am I really any ammount of contribution to this site?

Looks like a good purchase Lakeville.
Steven (aka auroradude) HP is just fine. If HP computers were that bad they wouldnt' be rated as high as they are. Besides I have an HP computer that is several years old (it came new with windows ME which I hate..) and it is just fine. It'* had no issues at all and has always performed just fine. We all don't need a custom built supermachine.

yeah if it was Automatic Updates causing the restart it would prompt you before it restarted, at least i would sure hope so, id hate to be working on something important and have my computer be restarted because it found new keyboard drivers...
usually the random restart is either caused by an overheating CPU, which i highly doubt since you just bought it, or its driver related, did you install anything on it that needed drivers? such as like a fancy mouse? oooooor printers? or something like that? if so try removing that and see if it still does it.
a clean windows install isnt a bad idea, my guess is your PC came with a Re-Installation CD instead of a regular installation cd, im not sure how those work exactly, never used one, but you may not be able to do a clean wipe and reinstall with it...check into it, if not....i sent you a PM

Shutup auroradude
Good little purchase there. I would say wipe the HD as well, put what you want on there, get rid of all that other junk companies like to load you up with.

I have 3 old HP Pavilions and 2 old Kayaks that sit here because technology ran away with them. ALL 5 of them still work and to this day, of the 5, the only problem I ever had was with 1 3.5" floppy drive (manufactured by TEAC), and one power supply.
All 5 of these computers are in the 4-7 year old range. And still work flawlessly.
All I can add at this point is that you're an ignorant opinionated SOB, so STFU, Auroradude, and maybe more members here will learn to tolerate you.
