How can people do this?

My girlfriend works for an animal shelter in Grafton. She got called out to a house that was in bad shape to remove cats. Here'* the link to the article. Very disturbing if you ask me.

Does any one else wonder what happened to the owner of the home? There'* NO WAY they could have been living in that house. It looked like it was once quite nice inside at one time too.. :?
