Does everyone here hate cops?

So does my husband; he is working on blowing away the physical standards and making friends on the local dept that he wants to join. He'* doing web design for them and photography right now, and they have asked him if he wants to take the soon-to-be-open dispatching position. He may over the summer. Dispatching is a great place to start from when jockeying for an officer position.

Are you ever going to pursue it seriously?

I hate Ohio, the state bears really suck there. I used to drive trucks through there doing 66 mph, that was my govenor, and the speed limit was 55. I still got pulled over for that. They had nothing else better to do. Cars can do 65 trucks 55, cars can get away with 75, depending on officer, trucks, can't really do oner 60 unless asking for trouble. Pretty much I had this problem on the 80-90 turnpike going to NYC. Boy i could not wait until I saw the 240 mile post then get on the CB and say "Come on drivers, let'* make a run for the border" and get the he@@ out of that state. I just never understood why Ohio speed is so low like that.

It'* a tough situation...we also have a few friends who are into things that they could be arrested for. They even live in the town he wants to be a cop in and occasionally have parties that the cops get called to by neighbors. He just told them, "Don't invite me over if you're doing anything illegal; I'll call before I come over socially so you have time to spray air-freshener or whatever ; and pray to God that I never get called to your place on duty for a noise complaint or something because I will have to follow procedure". They took it pretty well, considering. :P

Oh, and as for the studying electronics, you'd be surprised how many departments are looking for people with those skills...they might even consider you over another applicant because of them. You could always do part-time depending on work hours at your other job; you'd be set up perfectly if you worked freelance for your main job...something to think about.

Go to every local department you'd consider working in and ask, especially large departments. Where I am most small departments still use radios for everything (for financial reasons), but the city cruisers all have laptops in them that the information is relayed through. They need someone around to service them, don't they? If you find a department that is loaded with technology (some rich departments have all the goodies ) they are probably going to see the value of having an officer who can also service all of the gadgets. You'd likely be a regular officer most of the time, but they'd be really glad you're around at 1:00 am when the main server goes down!

You'd be surprised what skills they consider useful (my husband was told that his English degree would come in very handy and might even sway a department to hire him because cops spend so much time filling out paperwork and everyone appreciates someone who does it neatly and with proper grammar! :P ). Cops do so much that is not what we would typically guess; your skills just might get you a great law enforcement career. If you want to know more but are a little nervous about asking in person at a department, go to the law enforcement forum my husband always hangs out on, Officer.com...http://www.officer.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi. They are great guys (though they might bust your balls a little if you hang out there for a little while...just an initiation right of sorts ) and could probably answer any questions you have.

Good luck finding a job...who knows, maybe we'll have to start calling you "Officer L27Buick"!
