I agree with MOS. Run the defrag in Safe Mode. It only loads the basic drivers. I use Diskeeper 7.0 to defrag mine. Check the link below on the dell Forum. Lots of good info. Go to your OS forum and read all post about defragging or Dimension- Hard drive forum. All kinds of questions are answered about defragging.

Ok there'* another way to defrag & still be in normal mode too. "Disable" your Anti-Virus software before defragging. Most Anti-Virus software will NOT let anything written to your Hard Drive (Thinks it'* a Virus) & therefore stops the Defrag process. Once the Anti-Virus software is no longer in the picture, the Defrag process will continue normally. This assumes that you have Regularly defragged your Hard Drive too by the way. My 30GB Hard Drive takes 35min to defrag & I defrag once a month. The longer you wait between Defrags, the longer it takes to do the job, as just about every file has now been fragmented enough to scatter it'* info all over your hard drive.

Running Diskeeper 7.0 it takes about 3 to 4 min to defrag my 60gb HD. Have mine set to set it and forget it.
