Default Defragmenting Drive C

When I go to defragment my hard disk on our old computer (WIn 9 the defragmenting program keeps resetting itself saying that changes have been made to the disk. It only gets to wher it has the little boxes on the screen. Can anyone help out with this?

Default defrag

all programs need to be closed. i have a program called end-it-all that shuts down most programs running in the background to give more system reserve for gaming. works for me. no probs defragging.

All programs and non-system specific proccesses more or less need to be off. That means all the icons in your lower right start bar should be closed.

I would stay away from the Windows defrag. Norton is good, and so is Diskeeper.

Best way to defrag your C:/ partition is to run a defrag outside of windows so you can defrag all the running files.

If you have a screensaver enabled, it will do this. It'* the most common problem I see. Disable your screensaver and see if it works then...

Or, if you ain't got the money for extra programs, defrag in Safe mode (F8 during boot up, then select Safe Mode).

Try Safe Mode, Mike. This way only windows loads, no extra programs or unneccessary drivers.

To do a true scan or defrag outside of windows, you gotta spend money.
