Bumpers were designed to absorb impact.

Take it from a guy who has been hit before, causing back surgery and partial paralysis.

DON'T modify stock bumpers under any circumstances.

No offense Bill, but, modifying bumpers can save a life. On the aforementioned Chevrolet truck, they told my brother that if the stock bumper had been left on the truck, it would have killed him instantly. And those 72-87 bumpers weigh probably 50lbs.

You're talking pre-crumple zone technology. Get modern. If I had been rear-ended in my Bonneville instead of my 94 Buick Roadmaster Tank, I might not have had a back injury.
