If it does have a 5.7L engine, it was shoehorned in...

The 1985 Trans Am

The 1985 Trans Am got a boost from its base engine which was carbuerated produced 165 horsepower. The high-output form of this created 190 horsepower. Both were available in 4 speed autos or 5 speed manuals. But the top engine offered was the new breed, Tuned Port Injection, or TPI. The TPI boasted 205 horsepower available only in an automatic tranny. All three engines were 305 cid/5.0L. Inside, the Recaro edition was gone, but suspension was improved in the creation of the WS6 package. Optional inside was an electronic instrument panel, and air conditioning controls and with a pretty much standard two-tone interior trim.

The 1985 engines

Type Displacement Horsepower Torque Induction
OHV I-4 151/2.5 88@4400 132@2800 TBI
OHV V-6 173/2.8 135@5100 165@3600 PFI
OHV V-8 305/5.0 165@4200 250@2400 4 bbl
OHV V-8 305/5.0 190@48080 240@3200 4 bbl
OHV V-8 305/5.0 205@4400 275@3200 TPI

The 1986 Trans Am

Nothing really significant happened in 1986. Top choice once again was the TPI which pounded out 210 horsepower. The standard V-8 pushed out 150 horsepower with a 4 bbl carb and a 5 speed. Now, cast aluminum wheels were standard. All V-6 and V-8 models came with the Y99 Rally Tuned Suspension. The trunk saw a power pull down lid. (Which I have got MY fingers pinched in many a time.) Standard tire were P215/65R15s. Only base engine models came with an 85 mph speedo. With optional V-8s, a 140 mph speedometer was included.

OHV V-8 305/5.0 150@4200 235@2000 4 bbl

OHV V-8 305/5.0 210@4000 270@3200 TPI

1987 was the first year for the 350, but only produced 210hp, same as the TPI 305, and was also TPI...

Less power than I initially expected, but I'm guessing I could put more power in that car for not a tone of cash. Sounds like an awsome project car.

If you notice, none of the 350'* from 87 up were carbed. They're TPI (tuned port injection). So there is an aftermarket, or earlier model engine in there, carbed, prolly 4bbl, pushin', I'd say, 275hp, off the top of my head...Let us know!!

The LB9 engine (305 TPI) had no change in hp and torque 85-87. The 1985 numbers you qouted are correct. In 1988 the hp increased to 215 and the torque to 285. The 5.7 increased from 210hp - 225hp and 315ft. lbs. - 330ft. lbs.

Also there were only two carburated engine options available those years the LG4 and the L69. These are the 86 numbers.

LG4: 155hp at 4000rpm and 245ft. lbs. torque at 2400rpm(electronic carb)

L69: 190hp at 4800rpm and 240ft. lbs. torque at 3200rpm
