Sounds like hot towards the reading light switches is out somehow.

Blatzman, there appears to be some confusion between all of us on what type of dome lights are here. Can you take some pictures of the front and back assemblies and post them here for our reference?

Where does the power come from to turn the reading lights on?

Sorry, I don't have a diagram around where I am. I drew this up in a big hurry, it oversimplifies the picture in my head but it was quick and easy to do. Essentially, if the positive to the switch(es) is interrupted then you'd have most of your described behavior on the dual-purpose reading/dome lights.

So the BCM would control the lights with the door switches but power would come from the fuse box to control the switches manually? Is this right CathedralCub?
Would explain why they work with the doors open and not with the door closed. Also I'm not sure how to explain the lights. They both work on the same lights. Doors open all 4 lights in headliner go on. With manual button you can turn each light on separately but same light.

That'* how I've seen it done often, but my knowledge is a little stale. I'm sure someone here that has worked on these things recently would know more than I.

I just wanted to explain the beginning of [same light bulbs, different behavior] that we've been discussing. I think a lot of the newer cars have another path from the BCM that controls manual on/off so that the BCM can sigh heavily, grumble, and turn the light off for us when us humans forget to turn it off. I believe that would also require dedicated connections for each button to the ECM so it would know which light to turn on based on button pressed.

A thought: Find a picture online of what this vehicle has and post it here (provided the owner(*) of the picture allow it etc. yada yada). I saw some when I was looking around that are shaped like dome lights with a couple of buttons added (and a partition in the middle) . I'd be guessing that'* the one, however, I'd be guessing.

Hey guys. This problem turned out to be the LPS fuse was blown. Not sure why there was feed back issues with the dash lights but found the hot wire to feed the reading lights and followed it to the fuse box. I had checked the courtesy lights fuse and the BCM fuse and all was ok. LPS fuse just meaning Lamps, I figured was for something else and never checked. Thanks again for your info and help.
