Actually, the 65E runs hotter because of the way in manages TCC lockup. This is as explained to me by my trans builder.

Yup. He sure did. I forgot about that one.

I'm surprised it held up this long though, it took a lot of torque and 107,000 miles to kill the thing.

In my opinion the 60 is stonger only in one area. The drive chain. The single chain is indeed stronger than the dual chain in the 65 which is why we use the single chain and 60 gears in our beefed up 65 builds. GM introduced the double roller chain in the 65 as a way to quiet transaxle noise but in our case a little more noise for a stronger part is acceptable.

By the way 60 gears wont just fit right into a 65. We modify them to work.

The previous owner of my car bought it in 95 with 16K original miles from a dealership'* owner'* son. He then beat the crap out of it and needed 2 engine rebuilds and 2 transmission rebuilds over the course of the following 262K miles. Granted, he towed a yacht with it (2.93 gears, I think) and had almost no preventative maintenance, but on average 130K per engine and tranmsission is pretty good. I know the latest transmission build was about 40K miles ago, and the engine was rebuilt 110K miles ago. Pretty decent.
