Need to buy a code reader..which one?
well, based purely on your above specs:
which one is the best and does the most,
your answer is the tech2, the tool that all of GM uses and loves. It will tell you more about your computer than any other scan tool in use. bar none. there are a few things it can look at that no other scan tool can, and it'* as spiffy as all get-out. you can even have it run all of your lights through a diagnostic, so you can see which ones still work
but that'* just the least of it. i could talk for hours about it, but since you won't be buying it, i'll stop.
oh, and the usual package can scan *anything* made between 91 and 03. the one i used the other day was set up for 98-06 (no, that'* not a typo).

it'* a very powerful tool... very powerful

Well since you can already pull codes, I'll assume you mean scantool
I love my Actron, and haven't found anything lacking in it yet. Jr's3800 uses the same one on his 91 and 95 (95 takes a different cable).
I cover all years up to 93, and with the other cable, goes to 95. This is ALL GM'*, including the trucks.

here'* a few of the screens from my tech2 run yesterday. this is just a very smaalllllll portion of what you can look at...

<edit> dang. usually it takes a few hours before it kills the images. i'll have to try uploading to my other space, but it'* hard doing it here at work...

Got alot of other stuff I'd rather spend the investment portfolo on, so I think I'll opt for the less impressive model.
Sorry I miss spoke myself, I should have included "for less than a grand"

i figured. that'* why i said "which you won't be buying"

it'* sweeeeettttt though. seems like there'* a lot of luck out there with the actron.
I've been using a laptop with a homemade interface and free software. It allows up to 24 parameters to be displayed at once in chart form, and whole trips can be recorded and analyzed later. It'* a little tricky to learn, but works really well. See this thread for more details. I believe it only works for OBD1.
