Not be a doomsayer, but....
Just hope it was repaired soon enough, not like mine. The coolant contamination caused the internals to slow disentigrate. About 6 months later, BOOM! New wngine and tranny.

Keep the oil good and clean, and you should be fine, tho....

so, if he were to have the post 1999 UIM, he would never have to worry about the UIM gasket again? is that what the redesign was all about?

No.... From what we have found there was no revision of the Delphi Upper Intake .... The change was made to the Lower intake, they used a smaller diameter diameter stovepipe that would not contact the plastic surface...

we have heard of a couple of 00 Upper intakes fail... So anything goes..
