Does your car honk?

Also, if your doors are locked, and you try to open one, you know how your interior lights come on? The guy who ran the car stereo / alarm shop tried to show-off to me how cool it was that they installed the alarm so that it would go off if someone just tried to open the door handle, even if the car was locked. He thought that was really cool. I thought it was really stupid. I thought it was even *more* stupid when the alarm also sounded when I opened the door *after* unlocking the doors. Basically, you couldn't get into the car without sounding the alarm. That'* when their installer kid hopped on his motorcycle and came back from the Pontiac dealer with a Xerox of the dealer'* wiring schematic.
So I'm guessing the installer place was just blowing smoke when they said they hooked the alarm into the factory keyless entry, because my SE does not have the AU0 code, and I'm now convinced they just wired into the circuits for the lights/door locks/and trunk latch. I suppose if I *really* wanted to know I could take a look at their wiring.
My SE was originally owned by Alamo car rental in Hawaii, it was pretty basic and came from the factory without rear speakers. But it did come with the magnasteer, power driver seat, 16" 5-spoke wheels, and the higher torque final drive ratio (I average 21 MPG). The very lowest end came with 15" steel wheels, all manual seats, no magnasteer, and the gas-saving final drive ratios. I have the cloth interior and the column shifter too, but I rather like both of those.
So in conclusion, without the AU0 code, mine doesn't have factory keyless entry either. But I really like my aftermarket even better than the factory keyless on my wife'* `01 GP GT.

I figure with my Bonneville all the electric solenoids were already there, so I presume the keyless entry system must consist mostly of a "brain" wired into the door locks, trunk release, horn, and lights, and the receiver for the key fob. That is essentially what the aftermarket alarm brain is, which also connects into the door locks, the trunk release, and the lights (but at least in my case, not the horn) and offers (as far as I can tell) the exact same functionality. For all practical purposes, my aftermarket Clifford alarm has the same features (and a couple more) that the factory keyless entry system would have had. I'm happy with it! (Except the alarm unit chirps instead of tooting the horn.)
