I do know for sure that when I fill up the gas pump shuts off before I expect it to. Could the problem with the jolting be related with the vent valve?

Vapor lock in the fuel tank could cause a fuel starvation condition. Do you hear a hissing sound sometimes when you remove the fuel cap?
