You shouldnt get rid of it until it'* completely broken down. Otherwise all that money you spent to fix it up is wasted(you could have used THAT money for a newer car!).
If you are set on getting something new I suggest driving one 00-03 and a 96-99 to see which one you like better.

I had the same feelings with my old 1993 SSEi. It broke down very frequently, yet it had 150,000 miles on it, i guess it was to be expected at some point. My new 1993 Bonneville has gave me almost no issues since January, and Ive put something in the park of 10,000 miles on it.
Things I like about the older style:
1. Body styling, I LOVE how these cars look, they have that subtle rounded aerodynamic look, that keeps me looking back at the car even when I've parked it in the lot.
2. Interior design, the seats in these are generally more coushy than the 2k+ I have found.
3. The insturment cluster. While i think pontiac could of made better use of that stupid cigarette lighter, the gages are really nice, you dont see many cars with big swooping gages like these..(SSE and SSEi only)
I guess what really gets me is that I have a 12 year old car with more options than my parents 2002 Isuzu SUV, which btw, cost alot more than my car even did brand new. I love the fact that the gages light up orange at night, like an airplane cockpit.
But next year i still plan on buying a 2k+ for a few simple reasons.. I would like newer, and I would like to own a Series II for a while, do a few things to it, since it seems easier to get my hands on series II performance parts than Series I. I like the new body styling as well, something about it gets me all the time...
I guess its a toss up. I was told the same thing though, keep it or you will loose all that money you put into it..well, guess what? It kept on taking money from me, non stop. Couldnt justify spending that much any more..so bye bye it went.

I just drove a 2000 SSEi yesterday. Lots of really cool features, but it felt a heck of a lot smaller than my 98 SE....
Plus, I personally don't like how much alike the 2K+ Bonne'* GP'* and GA'* look alike. I prefer the 92-99 body style, with 96-99 being my favorite

My 93 SE had no problems except for plug wire replacment at about 100k. I sold it just last year with 148k. I bought my 01 SSEi in 01 and I love it. The styling is awsome and I really love the feel of the handling and power. Don't get me wrong though I am looking at getting a 96 - 99 SSEi in the future. I've always loved the look of the front of the car. And the rest of the body didn't change much from the styling of my 93. I really think that you should get what you like or would like to be seen in. The Bonnevilles have always been a classie vehicle no matter what year it was. Just do what feels good.
if it was me, i would have a tough time deciding between a 2000 SE and a 99 SSEi..
I like the newer styling better and the steering response and handling is 100x better in 2000 (in my opinion) However, a 99 with a supercharger wouldnt be too bad either...
