Default Illumination control on car w/ Digital Dash

What is it supposed to do?

Mine has never done anything and this past week I had to change out the unit* and thought it might work now. I drove it at night and still nothing and I was expecting at least the radio/climate controls to backlight on, or to control the brightness of the DIC itself.

This is in regards to the car in my sig.
Thanks
Tim

*unit = the one with the headlight/park buttons and the delay and illumination controls.

Steve...we need to read no picture included in this book. (thanks for the laugh BTW)

I've heard of some illuminated dashes in Trofeo'* etc where the entire dash needs to be swapped out or something of that nature.

Were you able to test the parts to ensure you replaced the correct one or was this a "possible" cause? Sorry...really not familiar with your dash setup.

The entire dash backlighting, DIC, Compass, Radio, and Climate Control should dim. If they don't, you have a wiring problem.

Is your headlamp switch new, or used?

C-body wiring is nearly identical to ours in almost every way.

I grabbed two (matching part#'* to the one off my car) used units from junkyard vehicles while I was there getting the grill stuff.

I tried both units and the illumination still does nothing. A new unit is $70 here.
I think its time for a schematic, Haynes sucks in the lack of details on the digital dash setups. Time to look into a FSM I think.

Also, I just remembered, when I took the dash apart to work on the hvac controllers, theres something like a lighting controller module under there. I'm not sure if I got the name right (doubt it) but its along those lines, if that helps any.
