Just wanted to make sure, your question about the coils caused my confusion. Ignition coils won't have anything to do with the starter turning over the motor.

There is a small wire going to the starter solenoid. This wire should have 12 volts when the key is in the start position. You can check this with a volt meter or 12 volt test light.

If the wire doesn't have 12 volts the problem is probably the ignition swtch or the park/neutral switch. Have you tried starting with the car in neutral?

If the wire has 12 volts then you have either a bad battery, bad starter/solenoid or a bad cable/connection.

Solenoid moves the starter gear to engage with the flywheel & then completes the circuit sending power to the starter motor. It'* located on the top of the starter. It'* where the wires connect to the starter.

I'm 99% sure there'* no starter relay on the 88'*.

Even a dead battery can still have 12 volts so testing with a meter doesn't help much. You might want to try giving it a jump.

Plus that wrench gets very hot very quick carrying that current shorting out the battery. I did it accidentally-one time. That'* all it took.

Default thanks you guys i believe i fixed the problem....

i went to start the car today at my wifes job hoping it will kick over so can get it home but i treid for 20 minutes and it did'nt. then i decided to play around with the wires from the battery to the starter and i noticed that the clamp that holds the power wires from the starter and the car to the battery was crqacked almost in two and full of crossion. i then put my jumpstarter directly on the wire for the starter and grounded the negative to the battery and i tried it and the car started right up. so i then went to autozone and picked up some new battery terminal'* both positive and negative and put them on. bonnie has been starting right up ever since.. well for the last 8 hours so far i have not had a problem and hopefully i do not encounter anymore.. thanks so much bonneville club and a special thatnks to technical ted.. you rock man... thanks
