The pinstripe tape doesn't look like the original SSE/i tails though. From that picture there it almost looks like it'* been lightly tinted, or even slightly translucent.

Yep, it'* a Belgian Fabrique National contact M98 Mauser. The work I did: Rebarrel as a 308Win, scope mounts, drop bolt handle , scallop the floorplate & trigger guard, bullet trap in the toe of the stock, fit/finish stock, checker it. Took about six months to do it.

From what I'm gathering from the photo is that he blacked out the red portions and then painted the exposed black?

There is someone in Souix City, IA or Souix Falls, SD area that has been 'painting' taillights recently & they looked really good.
If you want their email address for details, send me a PM & I'll get it to ya.
We were recently at a Pontiac show in Gretna, NE where they attended & had two Fiero'* with the painted taillights.
I'm looking for an extra set of Fiero GT taillights to do this to now.

There'* also the VHT NiteShades spray tint that may help.

Exactly! Here'* what he said:

When all the stripes are laid out I take a razor knife and cut the other end just to the inside of where the black out starts. I make sure to prep the surface prior to taping, then once taped I spray with trim paint. I am sure you could use a 1/4" masking tape, I use a product called stencil mask. It is much easier to work with.
