That'* it! I wax my car outdoors.. although not in direct sunlight, it does get some. I betcha the sun dries out the wax, making it impossible to wipe off.

Though I use Meguires Gold for a great wax job, I use Wizards Mist N Shine after every wash. Just spray it on a cloth, wipe on and wipe off. Great shine, finish, and protection! Then all I need to do is use the California Duster on it! Of course I only pu 2k miles a year on my Bonne the last 4 yrs, so it doesn't need much polishing.

Letting the wax sit all night is bad. It sets too long, and is too hard. I've had problems leaving Gold Class on longer then 30 minutes, it gets chunky and clogs up the towel quick!
For beginning i'd do these steps.
Thourough wash
Clay Bar
Polish
Wax
Smile.
