transmission/flexplate

I was recently informed of this site by another member named LittleHoov. I was answering a question he had at another forum and talked about bonnevilles. He PMed me about this site. Although that was some time ago, I am glad I have finally had a chance to come here and really scope it out. It looks like I may really get some answers to the questions I have about my car.
I do not know a whole lot about GM vehicles. I know mostly about old dodge musclecars and ford trucks, but little about any GM. I have done pretty good in the time I have had my car and the similar one I had before it, but there are some things that happen you can't fix without the right info
My flexplate cracked. I wouldn't believe this to be as big a deal as it has become, but with what I know about other apllications, transmission type matters. I do not have the factory transmission. It is not even a 3 spd, it has OD. Also 4 distinguishable detents felt through the shift lever on the column, all which still keep you in drive. There are not even locations for that many postions, which is fine for me, but it gives me an excuse to not let other people drive it 
So, can anybody give some help on how to ID my trans, where to look, etc? Can't look anywhere on the car itself, not the original trans. Does it really matter in this application? Once I find out about the trans I know it should be smooth sailing since many things that bolt up to the 350d bolt up to the gasser also. Flexplate, I would think, would be included, no?

So a Flexplate lets you bolt up, for example, a Chrysler Torq-flite to an older GM Car? I know there'* an ID Plate on all of our engines and xmissions. So there should be some identifying plate attached to this transmission that holds a clue to what you got. I would get underneath that car and spray it with some degreaser, wash it off, and look for that ID Plate. Good Luck.
I am pretty sure I still have a GM tranny, the pan says Hydramatic on it. Thanks for the ID plate info, guess I have to start digging for that, then maybe dig at some junkyards. I haven't actually removed the flexplate yet, so in all reality it could be fine, but there aren't too many things back there that could make such a noise and not leak. PLus my inspection cover has been gone prior to me purchasing the car so it is very likely something got in there that wasn't supposed to Thanks!
