Question for History Buffs
When I was a teen a farmer near Martinsburg, Iowa had a 34 Chevy with a factory installed V/8. Around 1960 People from GM offered him a brand new Cadillac for his car, and he refused. How did he get that engine from the factory, and was it a Cadillac engine? He must have had money in 1934, because he bought a new car and a new John Deere tractor that year. He was still driving both in 1964.
Personally I have no idea. If it was a V-8 engine built near 1934 and installed by the factory, it was probably a Cadillac. The only other much-less-likely alternative would be that they had a 1917-1918 Series D V-8 sitting around that they put in..
Times were still tough then after the depression. I bet for a few extra bucks the factory would have installed anything. There is also the potential that memory and stories change a little over the years. It could also be that this car was built at the factory, then shipped elsewhere for a V-8 swap, then shipped to the dealer . . . giving the impression that it is a "factory V-8" when it is a "delivered-to-the-dealer-by-an-upfitter-as-a-V-8" V-8.
Do you have any other data on this vehicle or engine? Or pictures? Or know the whereabouts of this vehicle?
I'd also be curious if the transmission, rear axle, and/or front suspension was different on this vehicle to accommodate the extra weight and power.

All I know is that it was common knowledge around Martinsburg, Iowa that around 1960 GM offered him a brand new Cadillac for the car and he refused. I was a mid teen, and i didn't think much about it at that time. As I gain more knowledge of the world I understood the importance of it. He drove that Chevy and that John Deere until he died. He drove both into town to get groceries at my aunt'* store. He was old and set in his ways. Body was good on that car, too!
