Depends on how long you smoked the system and the amount of fuel in the tank.. Ive had to smoke a system for at least 5 mins. to show a leak.

I had the same problem on 2002 Lasabre. I messed around with it for a year and finally gave up and took it to Buick dealer. They replaced the purge solonoid and have no trouble since. Cost about $150. I have kicked myself in the butt numerous times since then because I started several times to replce that part myself but just never did. They are only about $35 at parts store and easily replaced. They told me that was the most common cause of evap system failure.

i dont think they are common, i have never replaced one, its always been leaks, cap, lines, etc. a couple have been sticky vent valves, but i cleaned it and shot the valve with wd40 and it lasted as long as i had the car.

Thats interesting. My son is now haveing the same problem with 2001 maibu. It started when he lost the gas cap.I replaced the cap and and erased the code but severa days later it popped back up. Looked at it again last night and found dry rotted vacuum line on the solonoid.I have replced that so I'll see what happens now. Where is the vent valve located on the Malibu?

there are many evap codes on newer cars too, could be small leak, large leak, circuit codes for each device, etc....
normally on newer cars its in the back under the car, it will have a good size vacuum hose attached to the canister and a two pin electrical connector. and probably has a square filter attached to it
