I wouldn't worry about changing the cat before fixing the problem.
A bit of brutal honesty here: It'* a 1996 Corsica with a bent valve, possibly other damage to the head, possibly one or more damaged pistons, serious oil consumption issues, and 188,000 miles on it. Getting the head repaired and replacing the cat will probably cost more than the car is worth, and then there are the other issues lurking in its 188,000 mile history. I can understand many reasons for wanting to keep it anyways, just wanted to put that check and balance out there.
