For all those shafts to be stripped, he'd need a ton of power and pure luck. I'm banking on a diff pin that broke or the roll pin allowing the diff pin to move and carve those strips off the diff cover housing. there'* really no other way those could all be in the pan unless a different part was shaving the case.
The parts you mentioned should have gotten caught in the VB and it'* baby filters from what I've heard about fluid flow paths. Although I will say, I've never looked them up specifically and could be wrong on that.

Hmmm, good point Bill. I assumed it was all stuck to the magnet there fore not aluminum. I should check that. I thought I heard a grinding sound from the drivers side when the engine was running and in gear.
Once again, moving quickly may have tripped up my theory.
If that'* all steel, then it'* not the diff cover. Gotta look at pics again.
The stuff in your hand, looks like strips. Ground shafts are going to look more chunkish in my experience.
Yeah, looks like a large piece of steel was shaved. I ioriginally thought it looked like shaved aluminum strips.

Does it look like the roll pin broke or the diff pin itself?
Kinda cool huh? The cover is technically reusable as it sits since none of that should ever be touching, but since he needs a diff, I'd probably do another cover as well.
IIRC the reluctor wheels are how you can tell the diff'* apart if you don't check RPO'* at a JY. The reluctors on the end of the diff has a number stamped into it.
