It starts occasionally, goes to 1000 rpm and starts to drop off, any pedal input, it dies immediately.

Another thing you can try is unplug your MAF. The engine will stumble and run rough, and you will get a SES light. But it should smooth out. If that happens and the engine runs right, the MAF is bad.

Have you changed the fuel filter? A bad fuel filter can still build pressure in the fuel line, but restricts flow.
