I believe these engines also have TTY head bolts, which suggests replacement every time they are cracked open if memory serves.

That'* the nice thing about these engines and their cast iron construction. They don't warp, they crack, however it typically takes a castrophic failure of mechanical and operator proportions to do it.

I'm a VW guy. ALL head bolts get replaced, no matter what.

Not only are GM headbolts TTY, but they also have thread sealer on them to prevent coolant from entering the block.

They even color code the thread sealer, red, white, and blue. LOL

If I recall correctly, white was the sealant. Red and blue being thread lock, red being the strongest.
