Default reading check engine light

i have a 94 buick skylark with a 3100 engine and my check engine light came on i am told this is obd 1.5 and has to be checked by a dealer is that true or is there another way?

it should be obd 1.0. You should be able to find a local shop that can read it. Or their is the paper clip trick as long as it is 1.0

He needs to verify what he has first. Usually under the hood, you will find an emissions sticker that says something like OBD1 certified, or OBD2 Certified. But it won't say OBD 1.5. OBD 1.5 was used during 94 and 95 as a test platform before the govt made OBD2 mandatory on all US vehicles.

To tell the difference, the OBD 2 connector looks just like the OBD 1.5 connector, but the OBD1 connector is different.

Or just look at the 12 pin ALDL connector...if it has contacts in "A" and "B", then he can read flash codes...
