Default Horn Issues

1998 Buick Regal LS 3.8L

Every time I swing to the right the horn goes off and to shut it off I have to hit the horn pad on the steering ... Any ideas about how can it be solved ? ... I heard some of GM'* vehicles had those problems ...

Sure ......replace the air bag module(costly).....unfortunately, the horn switches are incorporated into the air bag....

Not sure about the Regal, but the LeSabre and Roadmaster had a skin over the airbag module that would tighten up and press the horn-contact membranes together in really cold weather. Funny thing is, after a few years of driving the LeSabre with no horn, I reconnected and the horns and haven't had the problem since . . . for three years so far. Perhaps the skin loses some tension due to age right after having too much due to cold? Maybe it is luck? I don't know. The skin was separate from the air bag. I found that out the easy way (with a knife then some tools) at a junkyard.

Weird thing for Javier is that is starts doing it when turning. That makes me think clock spring or bare wire or something. Problem is, that wouldn't normally be repaired by hitting anything . . . unless Javier is hitting so hard he'* vibrating the defect apart.

My LeSabre never did it while driving, only in a bad cold front at around 3AM when it got really really cold (and quiet) outside.

Yes there is something not right with this design. In my situation, I am starting to believe that hitting the horn pad previously too hard (panic strike) is a major contributing factor. Mine happened in cold weather.
On the Pk Ave, there are 2 small horn symbols and if you were instead to hit hard on the edge, instead pressing easily on the horn symbol, may give you the train sounding horns now stuck on, turning or not.
My horn problem began./stemmed form some idiot flying across 5 lanes of traffic cutting in front of my bow & man did I hit the horn pad!
Luckily I had the owners manual in the car & pulled the fuse. It was many weeks in warmer temps later,, that it seems finally to have settled down, back working normally again.
What fun!

When I took the junkyard one apart, it was clear to me that the contact pads were too close together. They're metal plated(??) on the sides that face each other and only separated by little teeny tiny looking nylonyunobtainiurethane (??) bumps spread pretty far apart for what they are doing. The skin facing the driver had a sort-of grid on the inside that presses between the nylonyunobtainiurethane (??) bumps. Every one of these that I've come across takes the slightest caress to trigger . . . to the point that I can easily understand why an ever-so-slight contraction of the skin when cold would cause this.

When I reconnected it on mine, my plan was to take the skin off and trim the grid back a little. Then when I reconnected and it worked fine I lost ambition for taking the steering wheel apart.

Personally, I fault GM on this. There is such a thing as too sensitive . . . and they know we are going to hit the horn hard, that'* 95% of it'* usage in the real world. If they couldn't build one strong enough then they should have gone the way Dodge did in the `90'* with their tiny push buttons:

Interesting. The horns would only activate by the side push buttons on the Dodge, So even if you were to hit the center pad, the horns would not blow? That would be a good way to ensure a solid contact.
I was surprised to see how similar the 98 Regal steering wheel pictured below, was to my 97 PA.

I noticed that if you grabbed the center pad on the Buick'*, there was available movement in them,
Definitely a finicky/sensitive design.

Yup. Long ago I worked somewhere with a bunch of them. First time I tried for the horn I thought it was broken . . . then I realized the little buttons. You definitely can't hit them easily by accident. You also can't hit them with the heel of your hand.
