Default 2000 PARK AVE.

When I turn the steering wheel to the left and then back it makes a loud squawking, grinding noise. This only happens when I am going very slow. Such as when you stop at a light or stop sign and then turn or in a parking lot when you are maneuvering to get into a parking spot. This is the only time the noise occurs. If youare going more than 5-10 miles an hour or more this sound disappears.

It may take an assistant in order to zero in on the source of this noise. If you had someone to turn the wheel while you listen for the sound. This may require walking near the vehicle in a safe location such as an empty parking lot. It may require raising the vehicle and placing it on jack stands. At this point have the assistant work the steering wheel. The problem could be in steering column, rack or ?
Additional testing is needed. You could call around to ask about a free estimate at some repair facilities or tire stores. This would help determine the problem area even if you want to repair it yourself.

Back in the day, my Chassis ears could isolate just about anything...

Could be just about anything, including a strut bearing....

The car makes the "loud squawking, grinding noise" somewhere, not the steering wheel itself, right?

Was thinking that too, but that would probably make the noise turning right as well. I'm thinking maybe it has a tired belt tensioner, bad tensioner or idler pulley, or maybe is just low on fluid.

Perhaps we'll be able to narrow it down more when Fred48 replies.

IS this is a complete full all the way over turn or ?
Keep in mind when in a full over turn, the pressure has greatly increased in the high pressure line, thus I avoid full over turns. My PA power steering pump will complain/squawk too.
It really is not a good idea to have it in full turns as it can overheat/damage the pump if left in the turn like that for more than a few seconds.
Air can be introduced into the system if the reservoir is not remaining full- leak somewhere?
