You touched a nerve with me on this one. This happens to me if I floor it, and I happen to be at a speed such that when it kicks down the rpm goes to say 4800+. There is a big roar when it kicks down, but no power for a second. Then it finally starts pulling, but just about then it upshifts. All in all it’* an evil sounding commotion accompanied by little acceleration. I’d rather just kick down to the next highest gear and use max engine torque.

On full throttle upshifts, you can feel the power drop just before the shift and come back right after. Must be the PCM pulling timing to save the tranny, and I guess that is what is happening on downshifts too. I just find the thing way to eager to downshift. Or if it would make big power up top I’d be fine with it kicking down.

I will say that with the TC off mine will smoke both front tires almost all the way through first gear if I stomp it off the line. The front end even moves sideways maybe a foot or so through first. I find this will not happen until the car is warmed up, maybe 10 minutes of running.
