Speakers for 300-400, good amp for them another 200.

Wiring, should always leave 10% of your budget for them, atleast that'* what i recommend for home HiFi.

You can do a GREAT sub setup for $600 easy, especially when you build your own box. How many subs do u want? I'm going to one Diamond Audio, as there'* no point for me to get a sub that'll go past the pain threshold many many many times... Of course adding more drivers makes things much larger, costlier and more complex.
