Default No sound from stock radio

1994 Bonne SSEi, AM/FM radio with CD player--it comes on, time and frequency are displayed, etc. Just no music/voice comes out of the speakers no matter how high you turn the volume or slide the "gain" control. There is a slight hiss. Are the display and amplifier on different circuits and fuses or something? Also, it won't switch to CD mode nor will it take a CD. Almost like there'* one in it already. But it'* not in CD mode and it doesn't eject anything when you push the eject button. As far as I know, the audio system has never been tampered with or removed from the car.

I really don't know much about this era of Bonneville, but...

My guess might be the CD transport mechanism has failed. This can also cause the audio to stop, depending on whether it was in a load or unload transition. It seems suspicious that your CD doesn't work, now you have no audio yet there is a slight hiss from the speakers.

Did your CD player work up until this point?

The previous owner says no, the radio didn't work while they had the car and they had the car for about 6 months before they couldn't start it and parked it in a field (the battery died, probably because of a faulty AC/heater blower control module. I put a new battery in and it started right up). I've only had possession for a week, and the radio didn't work when I got it. Yes, the battery was dead, but the anti-theft lock in the radio was never activated -- the radio doesn't give you the LOC code when you turn on the ignition. How hard is it to remove the radio and fix the CD player? I'd like to keep the stock radio because it has the controls in the steering wheel, but it'* not absolutely mandatory. Looks like you have to basically disassemble the whole dash to get the radio out in either case.

It'* probably cheapest and easiest to find a good used one on eBay. Again, it is possible that there is a different problem. I wish I had more to offer experience wise for your model year. I don't know if your car ever came with the option of an external amp. If so, this could also be suspect. Someone else may still chime in here that is more familiar with your problem.

There are two '95 Bonneville radios available locally from junk yards, both with tape decks instead of CDs. $50 and $65 respectively. Questions: Is there any difference in the hook-ups between a tape deck radio and a CD radio? How about the steering wheel controls, will they work with either/or (seems like there shouldn't be any difference as they are only radio controls, i.e., volume and channel)? Finally:
How do you get the radio out of the dash?
TIA

Hookups are the same for CD and Tape decks. All controls will be retained.

Pry off the dash trim with your fingers or a soft tool. It just pulls off. Only two screws retain the stereo. It should take you 2 minutes to remove it.

The radio did come out quite easily and I got a good used one with tape deck (I can hook up my MP3 player to it easier than to a CD player/radio) and the new unit wasn't even locked. So I've radio, tape and MP3. Outstanding. Thanks for the help!
