2006 Sound System Issues
I have a 1996 Bonneville with the Factory stereo that has the 7 band equalizer in it. Part # 16213372
The issue that i have been having and has recently gotten so bad is that the sound volume randomly goes up to full volume or down to nothing. Hard to identify a pattern but it seems to be more often when turning the wheel making me think there is a problem with the harness in the column. That being said it does happen when not turning too. Sometimes when it happens you can correct the issue right away and it stays other time you have to try a few times ( turning the volume up or down). This result is the same from the head unit and from the steering wheel controls.
Does anyone know if there is a wire or wires that I can disconnect from the back of the harness on the HU that I can remove that takes the steering wheel controls out of the equation and still leave the rest of the unit in tact including the controls on the face of the HU? I would like to see if it is the wiring harness of the steering controls that are the problem but so far on searching here and elsewhere I have not been able to ID if this is possible and what to remove.

thats a weird issue, do all the steering wheel controls still work normally?
as for disconnecting a wire from the HU I'll check out a few places I know of for some wiring diagrams, I only have the service manuals for a 2000, I'll update you if I find something out

Yes, all the steering wheel controls work as they shoud when it is not ramping up or down. For the short time that the sound is going up or down the volume control on the wheel (or face for that matter) will not override what is happening untill full or no volume has been reached. If the "event" is happening the mute will work to silince things at any time.

Ok so it sounds like its something in the radio itself beacuse as far as I know the output from the steering wheel controls goes right into the radio, no module inbetween so it sounds like its the HU itself
