Haro, I looked in my service manual CD and it said the usual cause of the symptoms your car is showing is a failing torque converter. any updates on this problem?
(BTW, this service manual CD covers ALL Gm vehicles 1990-2005.)

Sucks this is happening to you.
My initial thought is to drop the trans pan. If you see a mound of aluminum then the torque converter has let go and since aluminum is not magnetic is being pushed around the inside. If you see a lot of clutch material on the magnet then it may be a sign of too much line pressure in the trans which has burnt out the cluthces very quickly.
You should get a Tech-II on it and pull all the codes (not just SES lighting drivetrain codes but tranny codes, body codes etc...). There are a few real nasty trans codes that can set but do not light the SES lamp indicating a problem. If the trans has gears in it (3.69 im assuming) then you may have the dreaded 730 incorrect gear ratio code which can kill a trans very quickly because the PCM commands full pressure.
Good luck...
